As a classroom teacher and private tutor, I have seen the Summer Slide first-hand every year. Without regular practice at school, children forget a lot of what they learn over the summer from the previous school year.
This makes September stressful as children are struggling to remember the valuable skills that were taught only a few months ago and trying to get back into a more structured routine.
At Thriving Learners: Summer Learning Program, your child will get the attention and instruction that they need and deserve to thrive in school and beyond.
Guided by a highly-skilled and passionate teacher and teacher candidate team, your child will review key literacy and math skills and build upon what they already know.
At the end of the week, you will receive a mini report card outlining your child's current skills, progress they made in the week, and activities that you can do at home to maintain their progress until the new school year begins.
This program is designed for children, ages 4 to 9 years old.
With 15+ years of experience teaching violin lessons and music classes, private tutoring, and classroom teaching, Kate is passionate about teaching children in a variety of contexts and supporting parents and caregivers in their child's educational journey.
Kate has always had a love of reading, and as she began teaching in the classroom, she noticed that many students did not feel confident or capable as readers. Since then, she has been on a mission to help children learn foundational reading skills through a structured literacy approach that is supported by the science of how our brains learn to read. Kate makes learning to read fun and engaging, creating thriving readers.
Kate also helps parents and caregivers to support their child's reading journey by translating the reading research to make it easy to understand and practice foundational skills at home. Printable resources are also offered to support learning to read at home.
Kate has a Master of Arts in Child Study and Education, and an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Childhood and Social Institutions with a Minor in Psychology as well as a Certificate in Loss, Grief and Bereavement Studies.
Kate is a certified teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers in Canada.
Hannah began growing her passion for working with kids when she started as a skating instructor, teaching all levels and ages of skaters how to skate. Now, almost 10 years later, she has gained many different experiences such as working with children with mental health needs and learning disabilities, teaching university students, and partaking in French exchange programs to immerse herself in the language. All of these experiences have helped her become a well rounded educator. She firmly believes in the importance of inclusion and community building and that this starts with being able to take time one on one with students to understand and encourage their full potential.
She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Education at Western University’s Althouse College in the Intermediate/Senior stream. Her teachable subjects will be French and Social Sciences and although she is becoming qualified in the intermediate and senior ages, she has a passion for helping students of all ages. She also has an Honors Bachelor of Arts in French Studies and Psychology with a special interest in Developmental Psychology.
In her free time, Hannah loves to play pick up hockey, spend time with her friends and family, and take any opportunity to step outside in the sun, whether that is going for a run or hiking up a mountain.

This is more like fun school. Valuable personalized learning is the goal. And since we all learn things faster through play, our time together will be fun and playful, while still following evidence-based practices in literacy and math.
Do we have to sign up for the whole week?
This is a week-long investment because we want this to be a meaningful learning experience for your child. Throughout the week we will be building rapport, and planning lessons and games that are targeted specifically to drive your child's learning forward. This is not a drop-in opportunity.
What should my child bring with them each day?
Your child will need to bring what they would to school: snack, water bottle, change of clothes (food spills and accidents happen). If your child needs glasses, an EpiPen, or anything else for their health and safety, they should bring that as well. They will not need to bring a pencil case, notebooks, or special toys from home unless otherwise notified.
Will there be recess?
We will have a snack break mid-morning, but we will not have a formal recess time as much of our learning will be full of movement and fun.
How many children will be in each group?
We are two adults/teachers that will be working with a total of 8-13 students each week. This will give us the opportunity to have whole-group lessons that still feel cozy and we can all learn from each other, as well as small-group lessons of 4-7 students that provide more targeted instruction for each group's needs.
What age does my child have to be to participate?
Children between the ages of 4 and 9 are welcome to apply.
How do we apply?
Fill out the form below and send a copy of your child's most recent report card to [email protected]. If you are a homeschool family, a short interview over Zoom will take place in lieu of sending a report card. This is done to ensure we can meet your child's needs and to help us prepare our learning materials and curriculum for the week.
How do we pay?
A down payment of $150 is needed to secure your spot. An invoice will be sent to you following your application's acceptance. At 15 hours in one week working directly with a private teacher and the parent support that follows, this opportunity is valued at over $1500.
Can we sign up for more than one week?
Of course! We would love to support your child's learning over a longer period of time. The summer is a great opportunity to reinforce and build new skills that will help them feel confident for the new school year.
Will my child get a report card at the end?
At the end of our week together, parents will receive an email with notes on their child's progress and links to recommended resources and games that they can play together to practice their skills at home.
After you submit your application for review, you will receive a follow-up email with next steps within 5 days. Please check your spam and junk folders for this email.
I agree to be contacted by email. I understand that I can unsubscribe at any time.
