Maybe your child still sounds out every letter in every word. Maybe they guess from the picture, or look at you before they even try. Maybe the report card says they're not at benchmark, but nobody can tell you which skill is missing.
And at home, reading practice turns into more of a fight than it helps.
You've read together. You've done the sight word cards. You've encouraged them. And you're still wondering what you're missing.
Here's what we see again and again: reading isn't one skill. It's built from many smaller skills working together, like hearing the sounds in words, connecting those sounds to letters, and blending them into words. When one of those pieces is shaky, more practice of the same thing won't fix it.
Your child doesn't need more of the same practice. They need someone to find the gap.
"Okay we've learned letter sounds... now what?"
Sound Familiar?
An Ontario Certified Teacher on the Thriving Readers team meets with your child online to assess three areas:
Phonological awareness: can your child hear, blend and break apart the sounds in spoken words? This is the foundation reading is built on.
Reading: how your child connects letters to sounds and reads words, including words they've never seen before.
Spelling: what your child's spelling shows about the sound and letter patterns they know, and the ones they don't yet.
We keep it engaging and low-pressure, so your child feels comfortable and we see what they can really do.
After the session, your child's teacher scores and reviews every result to pinpoint strengths to celebrate, the specific skills getting in the way, and where your child is in their reading development.
We walk through your child's results in plain language, explain what's typical and what needs support, and answer every question you bring.
A clear summary of your child's results for your records. You can share it with your child's teacher, school team or family doctor to support conversations about classroom support or further assessment.
A short, doable routine built around the skills your child needs next, so the practice you do at home is focused on the right things.
We'll tell you honestly whether one-on-one tutoring would help, and what it would focus on. If you choose to start tutoring with Thriving Readers, you'll get 10% off your first 3 months.

Who's behind Find the Gap
Thriving Readers was founded by Kate, an Ontario Certified Teacher and structured literacy specialist with an MA in Child Study and Education. After six years in the classroom and years of private tutoring, she saw how often bright, capable kids struggled with reading without anyone pinpointing why. Find the Gap is built on the approach she uses with every family: figure out exactly which skills are getting in the way, then teach to them.
Every assessment is led by an Ontario Certified Teacher on the Thriving Readers team, using the same evidence-based approach. Meet our teachers.

It shows you exactly which reading skills your child has and which ones need support. Many families share the written report with their child's teacher or doctor to help decide on next steps.
