I'm a teacher, literacy specialist, and the founder of Thriving Readers.
Throughout my career, I've worked with children who needed more than extra practice. They needed instruction that matched how they learned, relationships that made them feel safe to take risks, and adults who believed in them before they believed in themselves.
That's why I founded Thriving Readers.

We primarily support beginning and struggling readers from preschool through Grade 4.

Your child’s tutoring sessions will be 1:1 and tailored to their unique needs and learning style.
In our first session, we’ll do a reading and spelling assessment to determine your child's current level.
This will show us what skills they already have and what’s missing. Using this info, we’ll create a personalized plan made just for them. We’ll do these assessments periodically and send you regular progress reports!
Most 30-60 minute reading tutoring sessions will include:
1️⃣Reviewing the skills they learned in previous sessions.
2️⃣Phonological awareness games that include rhyming and manipulating sound words, which are key to learning how to read.
3️⃣Learning a new reading and spelling skill and practicing it together.

Hi there! In case we haven’t met, I’m Kate.
I’m a certified reading teacher and literacy coach, and the founder of Thriving Readers. People often ask me, “Kate, why tutoring?”
I know why; I will never forget the moment I decided to dedicate all my heart and soul to helping kids learn to read.
I was working as a classroom teacher at the time. I was checking my email late at night (like teachers do!) when this message from a 7th-grade student stopped me in my tracks:
“Because I can’t read … I won’t be able to get a good job … I won’t be able to pay bills … I won’t be able to have a house … I’m going to be homeless.”
To say this broke my heart would be the understatement of the century.
No child should be worrying about not getting a job or being homeless – ever.
By not teaching our children to read, we are letting them down.
The truth is, teachers are not always taught how to teach reading effectively when they study for their Bachelor's degree in Education. It’s not that they don’t want to help their students succeed in this area – it’s that they truthfully don’t know how.
Luckily, when I received my MA in Child Study and Education, I was introduced to the science and shown how to teach reading in a way that all kids can understand.
I started using this approach and was thankfully supported by the school where I was working.
Before I knew it, I had more students coming to me to learn to read than I could keep up with.

What ages or grade levels do you work with?
Most of our students are in Grades K–4, but we work with children of all ages who are reading below a Grade 4 level—including preschoolers, middle schoolers, and even high school students. Book a free call to learn more.
Is my child too young for a reading tutor?
No. Reading support in the early years reduces the likelihood of developing low confidence and poor academic self-esteem. We can help young children develop foundational reading skills that will enable them to become capable learners from the very beginning. Book a free call to learn more.
Does my child need a diagnosis to work with you?
Nope! Some of our students have formal diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD, or language-based learning differences, and others are just not getting the right support or curriculum at school. If your child is struggling with reading, we can help.

How do I know which package is right for my child?

How quickly will I see results?

What does a typical tutoring session look like?
We begin by reviewing the letter sounds, heart words, and concepts that we have been working on so far.
We’ll also play phonological awareness games and patterns to rhyme and manipulate sound words, which is key in learning how to read.
Then, we’ll introduce a new concept or reading skill and play a variety of games and read decodable passages to practice it.
Because building relationships is so important to us and the success of your child’s sessions, we often close our sessions with share time and reading games just for fun.
