“I love all the things you offer – the personal attention, the promptness with communication, the flexibility, and the resources. But …
Reading is difficult for her.
Paying attention to academic materials for an hour is difficult for her.
Sitting still is difficult for her!
So, the very fact that she doesn’t hesitate in the slightest to sign onto her tutoring sessions with you is a major win in my books.
- Sandie, Thriving Readers Parent
Usually, he asks me to read them to him, and when I suggest he read them, he is reluctant. But now he has the confidence to try himself, and he usually gets the words right.
He has also recently started asking me for help writing poems and stories, which is a new and unexpected development, as he has never done so in the past.
All that to say, thank you.”
- V.B., Thriving Readers Parent
“My daughter went from being extremely behind in reading to grade-level within a few months.
Kate and Lauren have exceeded ALL of our expectations.
My daughter has gone from passive attendance at school to a willing, happy, and joyful participant in her classes. Her teachers are blown away by her progress and the transformation she has undergone since working with Thriving Readers.
We also love that they are extremely flexible and willing to work with families to fit tutoring seamlessly into their schedules. Thank you so much, Kate and Lauren!”

Hi, I'm Kate!
Certified Teacher and Literacy Coach
If there’s one thing I wish every parent of a struggling reader knew, it’s this:
Not to be dramatic, but if this were a novel …
“Wait and see” would be the villain.
The enemy.
The plotline that steals your happy ending. !!Gasp!!
As certified teachers and reading tutors serving children of all abilities and ages,
Instead, we follow an evidence-based approach that has been proven to help children of all backgrounds and abilities, but is (sadly) not often taught in schools.
Why are we so passionate about this approach and helping your child read now (versus waiting)?
Because the statistics are as shocking as permanent marker on the wall:
So, when you have concerns about your child’s reading abilities…
… but doubt your instincts because the school is telling you to “wait and see” what happens in a few years …
Trust yourself.
Your concerns are valid. They are a good enough reason to act.
And the sooner you act, the less time, money, stress, and fighting over homework you’ll have to go through in the long run. Whew!
“Waiting and seeing” won’t help your child read at grade level and beyond.
Your child absolutely has the potential to become a stronger, more confident reader.
With the right support and approach, they can thrive.
The problem? Most teachers were never shown the most effective, research-backed methods for teaching reading.
And even the ones who seek out that training on their own?
They’re often stuck under layers of red tape and told, “Sorry, we have to use this other program – it’s the one that’s funded.”
(Insert me eye-rolling hard right here.)
If you learned to read by going to school, you were likely part of the 60% who succeeded despite how reading was taught, not because of it.
Your child’s struggles with reading aren’t their fault.
They’re a result of a system that expects all kids to learn in a way that simply doesn’t work for almost half of them.
Some good news enters the chat:
We’ll meet your child where they’re at and create personalized, 1:1 sessions that ensure they reach their reading goals and potential.
Most importantly …
We’ll give your child the gift of not having to worry about being behind, and the confidence that they will have a good chance at a better life because they can read.
Not to mention …
They’ll actually look forward to their tutoring sessions with us. Win-Win!
The best compliment we hear from our students?
“Thank you for teaching me until I learn it.
From severe dyslexia and non-verbal conditions, to simply not getting the right curriculum at school …
We support all children who are reading at a Grade 4 level or below – regardless of their age, diagnosis, circumstances, or ability.
Most of our students are in grades K-4, but we happily serve students in a variety of age ranges, including preschoolers, middle schoolers, and high schoolers.
Homework and reading at night are always a fight. (Hang in there, we’ll change that!)
Your child has dyslexia, attention challenges, dysgraphia, a reading delay, or another verbal processing or learning disorder.
Your child has advanced reading skills and is not being sufficiently challenged in school.
You want to spend more time being your child’s parent, not their “reading coach” or “homework monitor.”
You homeschool and want to offload some of the educational responsibilities.
Your child is not receiving the right curriculum or support they need at school to learn to read.
Great question. We’ll tell you:
We use a evidence-based reading curriculum that has been tested and proven to help kids succeed, regardless of their:
✅Learning differences
✅Background
✅Socio-economic status
The curriculum we use is called UFLI.
Yep. No gatekeeping here. You can find UFLI on the Internet, watch YouTube videos on it, and even teach it to your child yourself.
OR, a better idea:
So we can identify any potential issues that arise and provide your child with the extra support they need.
So we can use all the teaching tricks we have up our sleeves when your child is struggling and needs more of an explanation than any curriculum answer key can provide.
So you don’t have the mental load of being your child’s reading tutor on top of being their parent.
Truthfully? We’re “big kids at heart” around here. We genuinely love working 1:1 with our students.
We are NOT here to ‘force’ reading upon your child.
Instead, we are here to:
Help them advance their reading skills
Meet them where they’re at
Give them a massive sense of confidence, self-belief, and accomplishment
Create an environment where they actually look forward to their tutoring sessions!

In our first session, we’ll do a reading and spelling assessment to determine your child's current level.
This will show us what skills they already have and what’s missing. Using this info, we’ll create a personalized plan made just for them. We’ll do these assessments periodically and send you regular progress reports!
Most 30-60 minute reading tutoring sessions will include:
1️⃣Reviewing the skills they learned in previous sessions.
2️⃣Phonological awareness games that include rhyming and manipulating sound words, which are key to learning how to read.
3️⃣Learning a new reading and spelling skill and practicing it together.
4️⃣ Show and share time and reading games – just for fun! Because building connections matters most.
5️⃣(Optional) Sending home any resources or skills to practice at home between sessions.
They have made such a profound impact on our daughter's academic journey.
We are endlessly grateful for their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to her success.”

Hi there! In case we haven’t met, I’m Kate.
I’m a certified reading teacher and literacy coach, and the founder of Thriving Readers. People often ask me, “Kate, why tutoring?”
I know why; I will never forget the moment I decided to dedicate all my heart and soul to helping kids learn to read.
I was working as a classroom teacher at the time. I was checking my email late at night (like teachers do!) when this message from a 7th-grade student stopped me in my tracks:
“Because I can’t read … I won’t be able to get a good job … I won’t be able to pay bills … I won’t be able to have a house … I’m going to be homeless.”
To say this broke my heart would be the understatement of the century.
No child should be worrying about not getting a job or being homeless – ever.
The truth is, teachers are not always taught how to teach reading effectively when they study for their Bachelor's degree in Education. It’s not that they don’t want to help their students succeed in this area – it’s that they truthfully don’t know how.
Luckily, when I received my MA in Child Study and Education, I was introduced to the science and shown how to teach reading in a way that all kids can understand.
I started using this approach and was thankfully supported by the school where I was working.
Before I knew it, I had more students coming to me to learn to read than I could keep up with.
Thriving Readers was born. Today, we are a small team of certified teachers, trained in the UFLI method, who are dedicated and passionate about working one-on-one with students, both online and in person, and helping them succeed.
Because we know literacy is a necessity for life.
“Kate and her team are truly excellent at what they do.

If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for in these FAQs, send us an email or book a free call to learn more. We’re always happy to talk through any questions you may have.
What ages or grade levels do you work with?
Most of our students are in Grades K–4, but we work with children of all ages who are reading below a Grade 4 level—including preschoolers, middle schoolers, and even high school students. Book a free call to learn more.
Is my child too young for a reading tutor?
No. Reading support in the early years reduces the likelihood of developing low confidence and poor academic self-esteem. We can help young children develop foundational reading skills that will enable them to become capable learners from the very beginning. Book a free call to learn more.
Does my child need a diagnosis to work with you?
Nope! Some of our students have formal diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD, or language-based learning differences, and others are just not getting the right support or curriculum at school. If your child is struggling with reading, we can help.
The best way to determine if we can support your child is to schedule a complimentary call with us to learn more. Book your free call with us.
What if my child doesn’t like reading or refuses to sit still?
We get it. Many of our students come to us feeling frustrated, restless, or exhausted after reading. The best way to know if we can support your child is to book a free call with us to chat more.
How do online sessions work? Will my child stay engaged?
Yes! Online tutoring is one of our most popular options. Our teachers use interactive tools, screen sharing, and games to keep kids engaged and focused. Many students even prefer online sessions once they try them! Online learning also provides greater flexibility in scheduling for your family.
Rest assured: this is definitely not a chaotic online learning environment of the COVID era. (Thank goodness!) Book a free call with us to learn more about online sessions.
Can I switch between online and in-person tutoring?
Absolutely. Based on your schedule and availability, you can choose online, in-person (if you're local), or a mix of both. We'll work with what’s best for your family. Book a free call to learn more!

How do I know which package is right for my child?
You don’t have to guess—we’ll help you decide! When you book your free consultation, we’ll recommend the best package based on your child’s goals, learning needs, grade level, and your schedule and budget.
How quickly will I see results?
While every child is unique, most families begin to see noticeable improvements in as little as three weeks. That might look like more confidence, smoother reading, or fewer homework battles—and often, all of the above. Book a free call to learn more.
What does a typical tutoring session look like?
We begin by reviewing the letter sounds, heart words, and concepts that we have been working on so far.
We’ll also play phonological awareness games and patterns to rhyme and manipulate sound words, which is key in learning how to read.
Then, we’ll introduce a new concept or reading skill and play a variety of games and read decodable passages to practice it.
Because building relationships is so important to us and the success of your child’s sessions, we often close our sessions with share time and reading games just for fun.
We work to keep each lesson engaging and tailored to your child's specific learning needs.

Kate has helped our daughter build self-belief, confidence, and self-esteem. Our daughter is doing so well in school now, and Kate has contributed greatly to this achievement.”

If you scrolled all this way …
You could:
❎Buy reading workbooks and try to work on reading at home
But those workbooks aren’t personalized to your child’s needs. They’re not based on proven, research-backed strategies – and let’s be honest: they don’t work. You know it; I know it! Every parent who has tried them knows it. #truestory!
❎Go with a big-box tutoring company
And get one teacher overseeing 4-5 students at once? Another hour of screen time with little engagement or connection with others? That’s not the focused, personalized support your child needs or deserves.
❎Find a more affordable tutor
Tutoring is not a regulated industry. Anyone can call themselves a tutor and charge whatever they want. A $20/hour tutor might sound good … until you realize your child isn’t making progress, isn’t enjoying it, and it’s ultimately a waste of time (and money – boo!).
I will not waste your time or money.
If I’m not completely confident that I can help your child, I’ll let you know during our free consultation.
We’ll give your child 1:1 personalized reading tutoring sessions – available online everywhere or in-person in the London-Strathroy area – designed to meet them where they are and help them move forward.
✔️ 1-2 hours per week
✔️ Month-to-month commitment only
✔️ No stress for you
✔️ Progress that your child—and you—can see and feel
Your child will look forward to tutoring each week and gain confidence as their reading skills grow.
You have nothing to lose by working with us for one month.
No questions asked. No pressure.
We might be a little biased here :), but …
Trusting us with your child’s reading is hands down a better investment than workbooks, bargain tutors, big-box programs, or crossing your fingers and hoping they catch up.
