Know Exactly What to Do to Help Your Child Read, One Email at a Time

A 30-day email series with one simple activity a day, so you always know exactly what to work on with your beginning reader. No worksheets, no guesswork, no becoming a reading teacher overnight.

You already read with your child. You already want to help. What's missing is knowing which skill to focus on next.

This series hands you the answer, one email a day, for 30 days. Each one is a small, doable activity that builds a specific reading skill, backed by Scarborough's Reading Rope and structured literacy research.

Sound familiar?

You're doing your best to help your child with reading. Maybe you're:

  • Sitting down to "practice reading" without really knowing what to practice

  • Watching your child guess at words instead of sounding them out

  • Wondering if what you're doing at home is actually the right thing

  • Feeling like reading advice online is either too vague ("read together every night!") or too complicated (phonics jargon you'd need a degree to follow)

Reading isn't one skill. It's a rope made of several smaller skills woven together: hearing sounds, decoding words, recognizing common words instantly, understanding vocabulary, following sentence structure, and more. Once you can see the individual strands, it gets a lot easier to know what your child actually needs.

Here's what's inside

Science of Reading at Home is a 30-day email series that walks you through every strand of the Reading Rope (and a few days of the Writing Rope too), one small activity at a time.

Each email includes:

  • One activity, most are quick, many need nothing but your voice

  • A plain-language explanation of why that skill matters and how it feeds into reading

  • Optional resources when a tool makes the activity easier (always optional, never required)

You'll move through:

  • Phonological awareness (hearing and playing with sounds)

  • Decoding (letter sounds, blending, digraphs, blends)

  • Sight recognition (common words your child can read instantly)

  • Background knowledge and vocabulary

  • Language structures and verbal reasoning

  • Literacy knowledge (how books actually work)

  • A few days of the Writing Rope: letter formation, spelling, and simple sentences

By day 30, you'll have played through every strand at least once, and you'll know exactly which activities to keep repeating.

How it works

  • Sign up once, for $30. No subscription, no recurring charge.

  • One email lands in your inbox each day for 30 days.

  • Do the activity whenever it fits, the car, the dinner table, bath time. Most days need no materials beyond your voice.

  • Miss a day? No problem. Pick back up wherever you left off. You genuinely cannot mess this up.

  • Reply anytime. I read every response and I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

A sneak peek at Day 2

Day 2: Rhyme Time

Today's strand: phonological awareness, the ability to hear and play with the sounds in words.

Play this back-and-forth game anywhere you've got a spare minute:

  • Say a simple word out loud ("cat")

  • Ask your child to say a word that rhymes ("hat," "bat," "mat," even silly made-up words like "zat" count!)

  • Keep going as long as it's fun

That's it. No materials, no prep, just a few minutes in the car or at the dinner table.

Who this is for

This series is built for parents of beginning readers, roughly kindergarten through grade 2, who already know their alphabet and are starting to sound out words. If your child is still learning letters and sounds from scratch, this isn't quite the right starting point yet, but reply to this page and I'll point you toward what is.

What parents are saying

"We no longer fear a learning disability and he is thriving! He is confident, curious and engaged."

Emma

"I finally understood literacy... you've given us resources so I can now help my son."

V.

"He now has the confidence to try himself."

About

Hey, I'm Kate!

An Ontario Certified Teacher and structured literacy specialist. After six years in the classroom and years of private reading tutoring, I built Thriving Readers to help parents understand exactly what their child needs, without needing a teaching degree to get there.

This series is the same approach I use with tutoring families, broken down into small, doable, at-home pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time does this take?

Most days are quick, five minutes or so. A few, like the days that involve reading a book together, may take a bit longer. Nothing is required beyond the core activity.

What age or grade is this for?

Beginning readers who already know their alphabet, generally kindergarten through grade 2.

Do I need to buy anything?

No. Most activities use things you already have (paper, a book, your voice). A few days mention an optional free resource.

What if I fall behind on the emails?

Pick back up wherever you left off. There's no deadline and no wrong way to work through it.

Is this the same as tutoring?

No. This is a self-guided series for families who want a clear, structured way to support reading at home. If your child needs more individualized support, I offer a free consultation to talk through what tutoring could look like.

Is this a subscription?

No. It's a single $30 payment for the full 30-day series.

What's your refund policy?

This series comes with something a lot of $30 products don't: direct access to me. Stuck on an activity? Not sure your child's ready for a strand? Reply anytime and I'll personally help you figure out the next step.

Digital products are non-refundable due to instant delivery, but you're never left to sort it out on your own. And if it becomes clear your child could use more individualized support than a self-guided series can give, I'll point you toward a free consultation to talk through what that could look like.

Thirty days. One small activity a day. A clear next step every single time.
